On this page we document how the idea of an EXPO in Dubai came about and how the initiators were thwarted step by step. A total of four folders with documents are available that can prove who the idea givers and initiators were and that they have not been honoured to this day. (English version: See right gap)

2005: كيف ظهرت فكرة معرض إكسبو في دبي

2005: How the idea of an EXPO in Dubai came about

In February 2005, the Frankfurt designer J. E. Aha travelled to the United Arab Emirates with his colleague and professional cyclist Gerd Sandig to make preparations for an international cycling race. Aha was immediately enchanted by the beauty and radiance of Dubai. His idea: Dubai should definitely apply to host the World EXPO. But they had no idea how to do it.

Dubai reception in Frankfurt

On 14 June 2005, Aha attended the reception in Frankfurt am Main at the ceremony organised by the city of Frankfurt to seal the partnership between Dubai and Frankfurt. There he spoke for the first time with the then Mayor of Dubai, His Excellency Quassim Sultan, about the idea of a World Expo in Dubai.

From 11 to 14 November 2005, Aha travelled to Dubai again, this time with an official business delegation of the Prime Minister of Hesse, Roland Koch, and with the Minister of Economics, Alois Rhiel.

There he met Joachim Richter from SYMTAQ, who had been living and working in Dubai since 1992. Aha told Richter about his idea to bring the EXPO to Dubai. Richter welcomed this proposal and immediately called his Arab business partner Ahmed Bin Thani Al Mehairi from the Ahmed bin Thani Group to join him. Together, a first EXPO Dubai planning team was founded and a first concept was worked out in November/December 2005. Initially, plans were made for an EXPO in 2015, later for 2020.

Involvement of world-leading architects and urban planners


In November 2005, the EXPO Dubai planning team brought in the world-renowned urban planners from Albert Speer + Partner and signed an agreement at the same moment. Prof. Albert Speer personally agreed to support Dubai's bid. The office had already prepared the plans for EXPO Hannover 2000.


In April 2006, the world-famous architectural firm Foster + Partners was involved. A first meeting was held in London and extensive correspondence on the project was conducted in the following weeks. Both planning offices were ready.

Cooperation with EXPO Hannover 2000


Next, the initiators flew to Hanover and won the support of the former EXPO 2000 city of Hanover. The successor to EXPO 2000 in Hanover was prepared to support a Dubai application and handed over the application documents and a lot of know-how to the EXPO Dubai planning team at the time. In May 2006, Ministerial Director Ernst Hüdepohl from the State Chancellery of Lower Saxony promised support after a personal meeting in Hanover and was also prepared to transfer know-how for Dubai's application. From the State Chancellery came a letter to the Mayor of Dubai City saying that they would be happy to advise Dubai, looking to the long relations between the UAE and Lower Saxony.

Oliver Parche, the then Deputy Delegate of the Delegate Office of German Business in Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates of the Chamber of Commerce Abroad in Dubai AHK, also welcomed the idea. Mr Oliver Parche pledged his support and henceforth assisted the EXPO Dubai planning team. After Mr Parche left the AHK Dubai, he became part of the initiating team. 

Involvement of the Club of Budpest


In June 2006, Mr. Arno Waschkau, a member of the new EXPO Dubai planning group, succeeded in winning over the Club of Budapest as an advisory body to strengthen the EXPO team. Mr Wolfgang Riehn, Executive Director of the Club of Budapest, agreed to advise Dubai in the event of a bid and to incorporate the results of the globally recognised Club of Budapest into an innovative concept for an EXPO in Dubai. The founder of the Club of Budapest Dr Ervin László, would be personally interested in advising on the concept of an EXPO Dubai (www.clubofbudapest.com).

Through the mediation of the Ahmed Bin Thani Group, a presentation was then organised with the Municipality of Dubai in April 2006. Mr. Munter Akram Juma, Director of Public Relations & Organisations Department, was in charge on behalf of the Municipality of Dubai, with whom several intensive preparatory talks were held. The talks in the Municipality of Dubai were very pleasant and constructive. Munter Akram Juma then organised a large presentation at the office of the Municipality of Dubai. The project of an EXPO Dubai was so important to the municipality that Mayor Hussain Nasser Ahmed Lootah (General Manager of Dubai Municipality) personally attended the meeting. The meeting took place on 02 May 2006 in the large meeting room of Dubai Municipality. The meeting was also attended by: 


- Sameer Moh`d Abdul Rahman, Head of Organisations and Awards Unit. 

- Yousuf Murad Salmeen, Head of Public Relations Section and 

- Khalid Mohd. Badri, Assisting Director of Public Relations & Organisations Dept.


A photographer and a film crew from Dubai Municipality also recorded this memorable session, which can be seen today as the actual launch of an EXPO Dubai.

The project group from Germany presented the philosophy and goals of a world exhibition, as well as initial ideas and a concept for Dubai's application to the office of the lead Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris. Dubai's competitors were also presented (Toronto, Izmir and Milan had already shown interest for 2015) and how to win against these competitors. The presentation was excellently received and Mr. Mayor Lootha also liked it very much.


In particular, Mr. Waschkau presented a calculation based on his experience as former CFO of EXPO 2000, and the city representatives were only still unsure whether to apply for 2015 or 2020.


After the presentation, which lasted several hours, they thanked us and asked us to further calculate the costs for an EXPO in more concrete terms and to sound out Dubai's chances at the BIE office in Paris. Helal Al Marri, Director General of the Dubai World Trade Center, would now be responsible for further processing.

On 8 May 2006, we immediately sent a letter of thanks and a revised version of our concept to Mayor Lootha. We made it clear once again that we were ready as a planning team for the preparation of an EXPO 2015 or 2020 and that we would be represented on site in Dubai by the Ahmed Bin Thani Group. Dubai Municipality then informed us that the Director General of the Dubai World Trade Center, Mr Helal Al Marri, was now responsible for further processing. 

A few days later, we met Mr. Helal Al Marri together with his colleague Ms. Antonija Stanich and presented the concept and the current status to him. Mr. Al Marri was very interested and thanked us.

Immediately afterwards, the initiators' team flew to Paris to meet the head of the EXPO company, Vicente González Loscertales, Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), in person. The meeting took place on 31 May 2006 at the headquarters of the EXPO company BIE (www.bie-paris.org/site/en/).


Secretary General Loscertales, together with Ms Laurence Levy-Toledo, received us very kindly and was pleasantly surprised by the idea of Dubai possibly applying for a World Expo. The Secretary General also explained further details about a possible application and gave us documents to take with us to prepare an "Official Notification of Application". He encouraged the delegation around Mr. Aha that Dubai should apply and wished them good luck.

With this good news in our luggage, the EXPO Dubai team flew back to Dubai again and met Mr. Al Marri once more on 8 June 2006 to inform him about the current status. Mr. Al Marri thanked us for the good meeting and promised to get back to us soon with news.

17 June 2006: Cancellation by Helal Al Marri: No EXPO in Dubai!


After we had emailed Helal Al Marri a revised concept on 17 June 2006, he wrote to us on the same day at 11:00 a.m. local time: Dubai will not hold an EXPO. A great disappointment! However, he also made it clear that he would contact us if there was another decision.

Dubai launches an EXPO bid anyway!


To our great astonishment, Dubai then started preparations for the application of an EXPO in Dubai in 2007. Dubai then contacted the BIE in Paris. On 2 November 2011, Dubai submitted its official application for an EXPO 2020 at a face-to-face meeting with Director General Loscertales.

Now the EXPO management no longer responds...

That same month we contacted the new EXPO Dubai office and asked why we were not informed or involved as promised. There was no response.


In December 2012, Mr. Richter and Mr. Aha travelled to Dubai again and had another conversation with Baraa Tarchichi Elite in the Municipality of Dubai to clarify the situation. We were told to address our concerns to the new EXPO management. But nothing happened after that. Our representative in Dubai, Ahmed Bin Thani, also tried again to contact the new EXPO office, but there was simply no response.

On 22 August 2006, Ahmed Bin Thani confirmed to us once again that the idea of an EXPO Dubai had come from us and that he would like to make efforts to resume talks with the EXPO company:

Contact again in 2014 - Still no response!

In 2014, we made another attempt to get ourselves remembered by the EXPO company in Dubai: Co-initiator Joachim Richter wrote a reminder to the new EXPO Director Reem Al Hashimy on 10 December 2014 that we as EXPO initiators had still not been contacted. We also formulated the request to finally be included in the EXPO team (see attached letter).

We ask the Dubai EXPO 2020:


- Why does Mr. Al Marri promise the German EXPO team to get in touch if an EXPO does take place, but then they don't keep their word? 


- Why were the initiators excluded and not rewarded for their good work or involved in the project in any way?


- Is it the right way to deal with idea developers who bring creative concepts to Dubai if you then simply take away their ideas and exclude them?

Wie kam die EXPO nach Dubai?

Im Februar 2005 reiste der Frankfurter Designer Aha mit seinem Kollegen und Rad-Profi Gerd Sandig in die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate, um dort die Vorbereitungen für ein internationales Radrennen zu treffen. Aha war sogleich verzaubert von der Schönheit und der Strahlkraft Dubais. Seine Idee: Dubai sollte sich unbedingt um die Vergabe der Weltausstellung EXPO bewerben. Doch dort hatte man noch keine Ahnung, wie das geht.
